16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence began on 25 November with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It culminates on 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day.
The theme this year is, “Come Together, Act Now”. This is a worldwide campaign and calls for reflection on violence against women, and action to end it, by insisting on accountability and commitment from our governments.
In crisis settings, such as conflict and war, gender-based violence levels are much higher. Post 7 October, many Israeli women have become victims of domestic violence and are not reporting it due to distrust of the police, and embarrassment owing to the war scenario. No woman should have to bear this.
This year, World WIZO’s focus is on sexual harassment in the workplace, and they seek to educate those in Human Resources to recognise the signs.
Women sufferers are encouraged to tell a friend, make a stand and take back their own power. They need to take action if possible by holding perpetrators accountable in order to show zero tolerance of violence against women and girls.
A positive way of investing in the prevention of violence, and in women’s rights, is by supporting WIZO who ensures that survivors receive justice and have access to essential services for their rehabilitation. WIZO has the resources and training to help victims leave their abusive situations safely and to rebuild and lead violence-free lives. There are shelters for abused women where they are provided therapies together with legal aid and financial support. WIZO attempts to assist these women to develop a plan and find ways to protect themselves and their children. Post shelter, WIZO has the Safety Net program which integrates women and their children back into their communities in order to live safe, sustainable and independent lives.
Because it is so important that the government pays attention to the plight of these women, we, at WIZO, try to make it clear to all that women’s lives matter. We encourage you to not be a bystander. Make sure that you are aware of safe ways to intervene if gender-based violence is happening around you. Report it, do not be afraid. It is absolutely essential to encourage all people who are aware of this issue, to do what matters!
Warm regards
