Hanukkah: A Season of Light and Resilience
On the 14th of December, we will usher in Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.
It is a time when we celebrate the miraculous triumph of the Jewish people, our victorious resistance against oppression, and our unwavering fight for our land, identity, and faith. The story of the Maccabees reminds us that even against overwhelming force, courage, unity, and conviction can change the course of history. Their struggle was not just military; it was spiritual, cultural, and deeply personal.
Alongside the Maccabees, we remember the hidden heroines of Hanukkah, women like Judith, who used wisdom and strategy to protect her people, demonstrating that victory does not always come from the sword, but from bravery, discernment, and an unshakable belief in justice. These women remind us that resistance is also done quietly, faithfully, and often behind the scenes, where the stakes are just as high.
This year, particularly, Hanukkah seems more relevant to the times we live in. We have found ourselves in difficult, unprecedented circumstances. Yet like our ancestors, we look back to our stories of old, stories that guide us with wisdom, strength, and hope in the face of adversity.
Through WIZO, we continue to channel that same spirit. We stand on the shoulders of the women of Israel who came before us, women of resilience, compassion, and action. They have always inspired us in how to navigate hardship, how to heal brokenness, and how to ensure that the vulnerable are protected and uplifted. In all our projects, every home for toddlers and for youths, every emergency shelter, and every empowerment programme, we, at WIZO, continue the work of preserving dignity, rebuilding lives, and ensuring that light continues to shine where darkness once lived.
As we enter the December holiday season, may we all carry the message of Hanukkah with us: that light expands even from the smallest spark, that victory is born from perseverance, and that miracles arrive when we refuse to give up, and WIZO women never give up.
Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyous festive season, and a Hanukkah filled with light, resilience, and renewed hope.
Am Israel Chai.
With love,
Shelley Trope-Friedman
