Nelson Mandela Day – A Legacy of Service That Lives Through Us
Nelson Mandela once reminded us that “what counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Those words continue to resonate because they remind us that true leadership is measured not by titles or recognition, but by service.
Each year on Nelson Mandela Day, South Africans are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes to serving others, symbolising the 67 years Madiba devoted to the struggle for justice, equality and human dignity. While these 67 minutes are a powerful reminder, they also challenge us to ask a deeper question: how do we make service part of the way we live every day?
At WIZO, this question lies at the heart of everything we do. For more than a century, WIZO has believed that lasting change begins by investing in people. Whether through early childhood education or creating opportunities for communities to flourish, our work is rooted in the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to build a better future for themselves.
Nelson Mandela understood that overcoming poverty and inequality requires more than compassion; it requires action. His legacy reminds us that each of us has the power to contribute, no matter how small the act may seem. A kind word, a helping hand, mentoring a young person, supporting a family in need or volunteering our time can all become powerful expressions of humanity.
As Am Yisrael, these values are deeply familiar. Our tradition teaches us that caring for others is not optional; it is a responsibility. Through acts of kindness, justice and community service, we help repair the world, one person at a time. This spirit has guided WIZO South Africa for over nine decades. Generations of women have dedicated themselves to strengthening communities in Israel while building a culture of compassion, leadership and giving within our own community. Their quiet acts of service have transformed countless lives, often without seeking recognition or reward.
Mandela’s legacy also reminds us that unity is one of our greatest strengths. By working together across communities, backgrounds and generations, we create opportunities for understanding, reconciliation and lasting social impact. These are values that continue to inspire WIZO’s work today.
Nelson Mandela Day is therefore more than a date on the calendar. It is an invitation to reflect on how each of us can contribute to a kinder, more just and compassionate society, not only for 67 minutes, but throughout the year.
As we honour Madiba’s extraordinary legacy, may we also remember that meaningful change begins with ordinary people choosing to care. Every act of generosity, every moment of compassion and every opportunity to lift another person reminds us that building a better world is still in our hands.
